Water Pollution in the PRD--A Panel Discussion on “Poisoning the Pearl”

How bad is it? Who is to blame? And what can the private sector do?

As southern China’s rapid industrialization continues to create high levels of pollution, the public and government are increasingly concerned about the impacts on water quality and health. Even as the government improves the regulation and enforcement of industrial pollution standards, businesses continue to face challenges in improving their own operations as well as their supply chains.

This panel combines perspectives on environmental protection, supply chain incentives, and public health to create an interactive dialogue with local and multinational businesses over what can be done to tackle the current water issues in Pearl River Delta.

Discussion topics include:

  • China’s Clean Production Law and recent increase in implementation and enforcement
  • Current challenges faced by companies on water pollution management in their supply chains
  • The findings of the recent Greenpeace investigative report on industrial pollutants in the PRD, “Poisoning the Pearl”
  • Impacts of industrial pollutants in the PRD on environment  and human health

Discussion will be held based on Chatham House rules
